the world face sexual violence every year. Young people are the most frequent victims of
sexual violence, it is generally thought that 12% to 25% of girls and 8% to 10% of boys
under 18 years of age will suffer sexual violence.
Rapes involving women with mental illness were twice as common in the adult group (Table
* 50% of all women who suffer from mental illness will suffer from sexual violence throughout their lifetime.
Sexual violence is a profound human rights violation and public health concern.
Sexual violence occurs to every race, class or creed, and it happens in both peacetime and war environments.
Offenders are most usually known by their victims
This could be an intimate partner, someone in the community, or even a family member or family friend. The monsters who carry out these acts on the innocent come from every walk of life just as their victims do.
More often than not, the guilty are men but there are numbers of children and women who commit sexual violence against women young and grown.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined Sexual violence as
“any sexual act, attempts to obtain a sexual act, or acts to traffic for sexual purposes, directed
against a person using coercion, harassment or advances made by any person regardless of their
relationship to the victim, in any setting, including but not limited to home and work.
-rape in marriage or dating relationships
- rape of non-romantic acquaintances;
-sexual abuse by persons of trust; religious leaders, community leaders, medical personnel, and family members
- rape by strangers;
This proves that the concept of sexual violence and/or rape occurring in a dark alley by a complete stranger is not always the case.
Another type of sexual abuse is “multiple perpetrator” rape meaning “gang rape”
Other forms of sexual violence that is prevalent through our world is
- sexual contact involving trickery, deception, blackmail or of persons who are incapacitated or are too drugged, drunk or intoxicated to consent;
- rape during armed conflict;
-sexual harassment, including demanding sex in return for work, school grades or favours; unwanted sexual touching;
-unwanted exposure to pornography; sexual abuse of mentally or physically disabled people; sexual abuse of boys and girls
-violent acts against sexual integrity, including female genital mutilation, inspections for virginity, forced anal examination and forced trafficking of people for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
In South Africa, for example, it is estimated that one in 25 women who have been raped have ever reported it to the police,6,7 compared with the USA, where higher reporting is found, but still only an estimated 40% of rapes are reported.
-Sexual coercion by an intimate partner is more common than rape by a non-intimate partner
-(WHO) more than one in five women have been forced into sex by an intimate partner.

Young girls from all over the world report that there first sexual experience was that of forced sex. Of the 6 out of 15 sites in the World that were studied, over 10% of the young women stated this. The highest number of forced first sex was in Bangladesh; one half to one third of the women state their first sexual experience in Bangladesh was of a forced first nature.
